Teaching IHL Summer Institute
June 4-5, 2008
Washington, D.C.

New to teaching International Humanitarian Law (IHL)?
Interested in incorporating IHL into your class?

On June 4-5, 2008, American University Washington College of Law Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (WCL) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will convene the first Teaching IHL Summer Institute in Washington, D.C. The Institute is targeted for law professors who are interested in teaching an IHL course for the first time, integrating IHL modules into their current courses and/or rethinking their current teaching of this important area.

Topics covered will include:

  • Defining the scope and content of an IHL class;
  • The intersection between international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and international criminal law;
  • Incorporating IHL into the teaching of immigration law; war on terror; women in conflict; and more;
  • Strategies for developing curricula, responding to current events, and gaining support from school administrations for the teaching of IHL.

Teaching faculty for the Institute will include: Prof. Robert K. Goldman (WCL); Prof. Gary Solis (Georgetown); and Prof. Doug Cassel (Notre Dame); Jamie Williamson (ICRC Washington Delegation Legal Advisor); and Alexandra Boivin (ICRC, Geneva).

The Teaching IHL Institute is an outcome of the 2007 ICRC/WCL study, Teaching International Humanitarian Law in US Law Schools which concluded that student demand for IHL courses is high but faculty need better resources, materials and support to expand the teaching of IHL in law schools in the US.  This Institute is an attempt to address those needs.

Cost of the two-day seminar is $250 per person and includes all materials and meals.
